For where two or three gather together in My name, there am I with them.”

The Importance of Prayer

Prayer Defined

How do you define prayer?  Simply put it is a conversation with God, i.e. talking and listening to God.

To Whom do we pray? We pray to God, our Heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ our Savior.

How do we listen to God? Through the Holy Spirit.

What is the importance of listening to God? Proverbs 19:27 states: If you cease to hear instruction, my son, you will stray from the words of knowledge. (BSB)

Is there a special place to pray? A quiet place without distractions. Matthew 6:6 says: But when you pray, go into your inner room, shut your door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. (BSB)

When should we pray? 1Thessalonians 5:16-18 says: Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. (BSB)

Why is saying thank you to God in our prayers so important?

  • It expresses appreciation and gratitude.
  • It is a sign of respect to God for who He is and what He has done.

Why do we end our prayers with Amen? The traditional definition is: So be it, truth, I believe it. In 2 Corinthians 1:20 it says: For all the promises of God are “Yes” in Christ. And so through Him, our “Amen” is spoken to the glory of God. (BSB)

Why is Jesus called the Bread of Life? Just as we eat bread for our physical bodies, we need "bread" for our spirit. John 6:35 says: Jesus answered, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never hunger, and whoever believes in Me will never thirst." (BSB)

Why Do We Pray?

  • To honor God's presence in our lives.
  • To thank God for all that He has done through His Son and our Savior, Jesus Christ.
  • To recognize God as our heavenly FATHER and our reliance on Him as His child.
  • To honor the gift of the Holy Spirit; the Spirit of Truth.
  • We need wisdom and discernment.
  • We need deliverance and healing.
  • We need protection from the evil one.
  • To fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. (Hebrews 12:2)
  • Earth is temporal. Heaven is eternal. We are sojourners (a temporary resident) and pilgrims (one who journeys in foreign lands) as noted in 1 Peter 2:11.
